New President of The Board
We are sorry to announce that due to health-related reasons our current Board president Dr Joanne Turner must step down.
To say we are disappointed is an understatement. We felt most fortunate to have Joanne as our President.
Over her long career as a professor of social work, Joanne chaired several boards, including the Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto, and the Ontario College of Social Workers. She brought a depth of experience and skill to the position, and she will be missed. We wish her all the best and good health moving forward.
At a Special Meeting on 11 October 2022, the Board met and elected Denise Réaume as President for the remainder of this term.
We feel very lucky to have Denise as our new President. She has been a resident at KAL since 2016. Educated at Queen’s and Oxford law schools, she specializes in civil liability and in anti-discrimination law. Denise was a professor at the University of Toronto law school for 38 years.
Denise can often be found—as she is here--in the KAL gardens, working on a cryptic crossword. She is always delighted to talk with residents.

The Board wishes to thank Denise for taking on the role of President.

Volunteers Needed for the Kitchen Garden
The Kitchen Garden Team needs volunteers.
We had a very good harvest this summer, if we do say so ourselves. And have heard much positive feedback.
We are thinking about expanding our operations next summer to be able to increase both variety and quantity.
But we need more helpers to be able to do so. Anyone interested in volunteering to plant, water, tend, and harvest, please let us know.
Whether you have experience growing food or just like to muck about in the garden, let us know how you'd like to help, and we will try to find a place for you in the operation.
People who are usually around in the summer are especially encouraged to volunteer, but even if you are away for part of the summer, let us know your interest and your availability.
Please email Denise Réaume (denise.reaume@gmail.com) or Linda Leenders (lrleenders@gmail.com) to volunteer.
More Volunteers
The Green Committee is seeking new members. We welcome persons interested in joining our efforts to advise the Board on methods and procedures aimed at: making energy use at Kensington less carbon intense or unnecessary; and instituting procedures to reduce generation of waste that is not recycled, and to encourage recycling and reuse. The Committee meets about four times/ year and sets meeting times so as not to conflict with members' work or other commitments.
Interested residents please email Adrian Wilkinson (Co-Chair of the Committee) at adrianwilki@gmail.com, or leave a message with the RSO.
Speaking of Volunteers…
Our committees are the lifeblood of the KAL community. Any KAL resident interested in getting involved, can find more information on the Shareholder’s Area of the KAL Website. Look for Life at KAL/Committees and Reports.
WHAT’S HAPPENING with the Damaged Drain (formerly known as the sinkhole)?
The last phase of this project – connecting the new drain to the city sewer system – is complex. Our drain is some way from the Rosedale Valley Road; the slope is steep; and we need to do as little damage as possible to the trees, which themselves stabilize the ravine. The engineers have worked through various options and are planning on “micro-excavation” using an excavator that is only 28” wide and is operated remotely.
(We may sell tickets to watch!)
The engineering plan is formulated, an arborist is reviewing the plans to consider the impact on the ravine, and a proposal will be made to the three levels of government – province, city, and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority – from whom we need permits.
Yes, it is taking a long time, but this is work that must be done carefully to protect and preserve the unique natural environment in which this building sits. We are doing everything in our power to speed things along.
WHY was the whirlpool out of order… again?
There was yet another leak, this time at a part called the skimmer, which continuously cleans the water’s surface. It has now been repaired at no cost and is up and running.
And finally…
Why are the fall colours so glorious this year?
